FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Somewhere?

What's a Persona?
A persona is an on-line profile for someone. By including all the content that this person posts in blogs, social networks, chats and other sites you get a view of their online presence. We call it a persona, because people might have more than one persona. They might have some sites for work friends, others for school friends or family. You can create different personas for yourself to share, or for your friends.
How does Somewhere work?
When you create an account, you tell us about about your friends (Peeps) and their on-line pages. You can do it at the start, or easily add them as you view them. It's also a good idea to tell us about yourself so that you can let your friends can keep up with all your new content. Then Somewhere constantly checks your friend's sites and shows you what's new on your Peep List.
What's a Peep List?
(We thought you might ask this one!) A Peep list, is a list of your Peeps that shows you all of their sites and highlights what's new. You can click on a Peep to see a summary of what's new. Then you can click again to go right to the site with the original content. So if it's new photo's from Flickr, you'll see the first photo, and then you can go to Flickr, or Facebook or the blog etc.
How do I see my Peep list?
You can view your peep list anytime by logging in to the Somewhere web-site. You can also add the Peep list to your personal home page (such as iGoogle and others) as a widget. This way, you can see what's new all day without going anywhere!

What are services?
A service is someone's online content. It can be someone's Facebook page, a PhotoBucket account, a blog or an instant messaging account. You tell Somewhere where to find the content and we create a subscription to that service. We have a number of builtin services, and you can use RSS feeds to gather data from anywhere else. We're always adding support for more services, so if you have an idea, please let us know!

Other Things

Do my Peeps (Friends) need to join Somewhere for this to be useful?
Your friends do not need to join. (Though it is better if they join.) You can setup profiles for your Peeps just by knowing where their online pages are. If they join Somewhere, they can manage their profile for you. So, if they add a new site, such as a new photo site, you'll know about it automatically.
Why should I enter my own sites?
There's two good reasons to enter your own sites. First, you can use it to let people know more about you. You can post your own profile on your blog so that visitors to your blog will know about your photo and social network pages. Then as you add more sites and content, visitors will see it all automatically. The other reason is so that you can share with your friends. When you invite a friend to join Somewhere, you can send them your profile. Now they can keep up with all the content you want to share!
Can I only keep up with Peeps I know?
You can create a persona for anyone. A peep can be a friend or a blogger whose content you like. It can even be a band, or a politician or even a software technology executive. Anyone who posts content on the internet can be your peep.
